Accidentally Put Pressure on a unretracted EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM

Hi Guys,

I've done a really stupid thing which I put my camera bag on my chair and forgot about it. Then, i leaned on it with quite some pressure while I'm sitting on the chair (Refer to the sketch that I attached). When I found out, I immediately take the camera out and found that the retractable lens (The EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM) is not in locked position, in fact it's at around 24 and 28mm. (The camera is not on tho) Will I damage the lens in any way? The lens seems fine at the moment but I'm still pretty paranoid about it. Can someone that know how the mechanism work gives me an ease of heart please. Thank you.

Greetings OwenJK,

I'm sorry to hear about the incident with your camera equipment. The zoom ring on the lens should full rotate from end to end for the focal distance as well as turning to allow you to lock it. In case there are any issues with the performance of the zoom ring then we would suggest to send the lens in to our facility for service. Depending on the type of damage the lens may have, the camera would also produce an Error 01.

In case you have any questions regarding the repair estimate the facility provides to you via email after you've sent in the lens then you may reply to the email for assistance.

Canon U.S.A., Inc. has created a new online repair portal that allows you to set up service in a few simple steps. The repair portal gives you the ability to set up service for multiple pieces of equipment at once, and to receive a repair estimate in the majority of cases, depending on your model and issue. The portal also allows you to upload images or videos that will assist us in repairing your product. You can also select how you wish to be notified of the progress of your repair. The portal's service history section allows you to view all services that have been performed on any of your camera or video products since January 7, 2020.

Please follow the link below to access our online repair portal to arrange for service:

One thing to try before you send it in for service.

If you put pressure on the lens you might have "bent" the extending part in the lens housing. Look carefully at the lens from all directions around the circumference. Does it look like the moveable part is deformed to one direction rather than being concentric in the lens barrel?

If so, try carefully putting pressure on it to push it back in line. That sometimes worked. it worked for me on a lens (admittedly not an M50 camera lens, but a Rebel lens).

If you are uncertain or uncomfortable trying that then contact canon for repair service.

"Will I damage the lens in any way?"

You really don't have any choice but to try it. The M series lenses are similar to the EF-S lenses and aren't as robust as the L line is. Like John said look it over to make sure it isn't physically damaged. If it works, it works and don't worry about it.  But you have to try it.
