replaced usb cable front printer to laptop, powered both off and back on, still shows printer offline???

I am trying to install a pixma ip100 printer on windows 8. We had a older pixma ip100 that lasted many years. However we get this printer offline message on the new printer, while the older printer is able to print on the same pc. Canon reps need to give better answers or else they are going to get alot of printers returned to the stores after customers are given unsatisfactory answers
