Why does my Canon MX726 take so long to prime itself?

Why does my Canon MX726 take so long to prime itself?  It often seems to stop just before it prints and moans and groans and re-jigs itself.  This means that printing takes so long, when you are just waiting for a document to spit out of the printer.

Always keep your printer on. It uses minuscule amount of electricity, and it won't use tons of excess ink to prime itself every time you turn it on. That is what it's doing when it creaks and groans when you turn it on to print.
