Hello -- our lightly used TR8620a had a paper jam a week and a half ago. Ever since we cleared it, it stopped printing from the lower front tray. We have indicated in our printer settings -- print only from this tray -- not the back -- and when we try to send the job to the front tray, we hear a grinding sound and if we are lucky a sheet of paper will get stuck along the bottom of the printer and jam. Printing from the back feeder, which is inconvenient, especially when we have a lot of pages, is not why we bought this unit. Any fixes? It's been troublefree until now. Only 18 months old.

Hi scott11101! Thanks for posting in the Canon Community Forum. I see that your PIXMA TR8620 is no longer feeding from the lower cassette.
I understand the frustration, especially because the printer has been lightly used for the last year and a half. However, it is possible for the printer to become damaged during a paper jam or during the process of removing a paper jam (even if the instructions for removing a paper jam are followed). The grinding noises you are hearing are most likely being caused by a gear that is no longer working properly or broken.
If you have not done so, I recommend looking for a paper jam in the back of the printer. The following link has instructions that will help with that:
The Roller Cleaning option in the printer’s Maintenance menu can also help if the problem is being caused by the roller (and not a mechanical issue or paper jam). We do recommend performing that cleaning procedure up to three times. If the paper is still not feeding or if it jams even when properly loaded, then the printer is no longer functioning properly and requires service.
The instructions for cleaning the roller can be found in the following section of the printer’s manual:
https://ij.manual.canon/ij/webmanual/Manual/All/TR8600%20series/EN/UG/ug-143.html
When the cleaning is complete, you will be asked to load three sheets of plain paper (step 9). When you get to that step, please make sure that the guides in the paper tray are adjusted to match both the width and the length of the paper as mentioned/ illustrated in steps 7 and 8 of the following article:
https://ij.manual.canon/ij/webmanual/Manual/All/TR8600%20series/EN/UG/ug-107.html
Please be sure that you are loading plain paper that is between 64 and 105 gsm thick (or between 17 and 28 lb) because that is the only type of paper recommend ed for the lower cassette. Only the following paper sizes can be loaded in the lower cassette:
The printer does come with a one-year warranty. If you purchased a warranty extension directly from Canon on or around the date of purchase and the Roller Cleaning doesn’t help, I recommend that you create a Canon Account, register the printer, and call us at 1-800-652-2666. Our agents are available Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 PM Eastern time.
You can create your Canon Account and register the printer at the following website:

If you did not purchase a warranty extension and the Roller Cleaning doesn’t help, it may be more cost effective to purchase a replacement than to pay someone to fix your printer. Through our Canon Upgrade Program, we can offer you a discount and free shipping on a new printer. If you are interested in that, please call (866) 443-8002 from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Eastern Time), Monday through Friday to speak with one of our sales agents who would be happy to help you.
I hope this information helps. Thanks for choosing Canon.
