Pixma MX870 Will not scan.. Window says to set PC to start scanning. How do I do this please?

I am connecting my printer via USB port.  I can print, but cannot scan a photo I need.  The window comes up saying to "set PC to start scanning.  Please, NEED this picture, how do I set it up please!  Thank you so very much.
