PIXMA TS7720 - Close scanner lid issue

Hi - I am trying to set up my new printer but a message stating "close scanner lid (cover)" will not go away no matter how many times I open and close the lid. Is this a faulty unit or is there some trick that I am overlooking?

A "Close scanner lid error" when the lid is already closed usually indicates an issue with the lid's sensor, an obstruction, or a minor software glitch. Here are the steps to troubleshoot the Canon Pixma TS7720 error:

Troubleshooting Steps
  1. Check for Obstructions
    • Inspect hinges and covers: Open the scanner lid and check for any paper scraps, debris, or foreign objects around the hinges and the edges of the scanner glass that might prevent it from closing completely or block the sensor.
    • Ensure cartridges are seated: If you recently replaced ink cartridges, ensure they are properly installed and clicked into place. Misaligned cartridges can sometimes interfere with the full closure of the printer's main access cover (which includes the scanner unit).
  2. Power Cycle the Printer
    • Turn off and unplug: With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
    • Wait: Wait for at least 60 seconds.
    • Reconnect and turn on: Plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer. This can reset the internal sensors and clear temporary errors. It is recommended to plug the printer directly into a wall outlet.
  3. Ensure Proper Closure
    • Open and close gently: Open the scanner lid/unit slightly higher than a normal open position, then gently but firmly close it, making sure it clicks or seats correctly into place. Avoid forcing it shut.
    • Check all covers: Ensure the main operation panel (the part with the screen) and any other covers are securely closed. A message on the screen may specify which exact cover needs attention.
  4. Clean the Sensors
    • Locate the sensor area: There might be small sensors or switches (sometimes a small white plastic catch, often on the right side) that detect the lid's status.
    • Gently clean: Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently clean around the sensor areas and the corresponding part of the lid. Dust or debris can sometimes cause a false "open" reading.
  5. Update Printer Drivers and Firmware
    • Outdated drivers or firmware can cause communication errors. You can check for and download the latest drivers and software (specifically the Master Setup file) from the official Canon U.S.A. support page.
If the problem persists, the sensor mechanism may be faulty and require professional servicing. In that case, you can log in to your My Canon account to explore service options or contact Canon technical support directly at 1-800-OK-CANON (1-800-652-2666).
