PIXMA TR4720 will not let me start to enter password

Just received the tr4720 printer. followed all the instructions to set it up. but when the screen asks me to enter the password for my wifi it will not accept  the first character of my password which is the number 1 ,

it just beeps each time that i press the number of 1

can any one offer help for a 77 year old non computer guy
