PIXMA MG5620 has error code 1660 because of empty ink tank, how can I scan?

I have a PIXMA MG5620 that I got used. It gives me the error code 1660 whenever I turn it on and stays stuck there.
I opened the cover to find that there are no cartridges for ink, they have been removed, which is probably why the printer is giving that error code.
However, I do not want to print, just to scan documents. How can I bypass that error code to be able to scan? Surely it doesn't need ink to scan...
Thank you.

Greetings ,

The MG5620 is a printer with scanning and copying capability.  In order to operate it has to have inks installed.

Canon also sells scanners with no printing capability if that's what you are looking for.

The printer has a copy function so it requires ink to print it.

I understand that it would need ink to make a copy, but that is not what I want to do, I just want to scan a file into a pdf, there is no ink involved in that process at all. It would make sense that the printer still allows you to do that even with no ink installed. Or else it would be like a car that won't let you turn on the radio because it ran out of gas.

Thanks for joining the conversation, Cadwallader! We're happy to share that it's possible to scan with an empty ink tank or cartridge. To start scanning, follow the instructions at this link.
