MP Navigator and Windows 8

MP 500 printer - works fine in Windows 8 but the scanning function MP Navigator does not - loads but the scan fails (does not even start).  Any ideas how to get it working or is there a third-party program that would work?  Have tried compatibality mode etc.  Nothing.   Is my scanner obsolete for Windows 8?
