MG5520 won't print black text using Media Type Plain Paper...works fine w/ Media Type Photo Paper

this just started happening a couple weeks ago.

My MG5520 won't print black text using Media Type Plain Paper, but works fine w/ Media Type Photo Paper.  My understanding is that by choosing Photo Paper it actually creates black ink from the color cartridges...which points to a cartridge problem.  Or it uses the dye ink (BK) when I choose Photo Paper and pigment ink (PGBK) when I choose plain paper.

When a print a Windows Printer Test Page everything prints fine, including black text.

All drivers updated today to the most recent.  No change in performance.

When I print

I did originally do a deep clean and everything looked fine, so I'm inclined to think it is NOT the cartridge itself.  Although admittedly if it's the large black cartridge it's the only one that I currently do not have, so I can't just try another cartridge unless I purchase one (ugghh!).  I'd rather not buy another Black cartridge when the one I have is nearly full.

I did just do a Cleaning (not a Deep Cleaning) and a Check Nozzle Pattern...and it printed 2 C (Cayan) lines, 2 M (Magenta) lines, 1 Y (Yellow) line and 1 BK (Black) line.  It did not print any lines for PGBK...but it's not clear to me i it should.

Does all of this point to a bad PGBK cartridge?  Thanks much.

Hi pos1,

The PGBK section should print on the nozzle check from your PIXMA MG5520.

Please follow the steps on this page to resolve this issue:

If your PIXMA MG5520 still does not print PGBK, it would require service.  If your PIXMA MG5520 was purchased less than a year ago, please contact one of Canon's Technical Support Representatives via phone or chat to obtain your in warranty options.
