The ip8720 uses two black ink tanks for printing. The small black is for printing graphics and the large black is for printing text. If you can print images but, text is missing, it usually means the PGBK is missing from the nozzle check print. You can view a sample image of the nozzle check using the link provided HERE. To print documents, you will need the grid marked (A) to appear in the nozzle check.
If the grid is missing, you can try cleaning the print head nozzles using the step provided HERE. After performing a cleaning, you can try another nozzle check using the steps HERE to see if the PGBK grid starts to show up.
If the grid still does not appears, you can try two deep cleanings using the steps provided HERE. You can print a nozzle check between the deep cleanings to see if it works. If it still does not appear, you can try another PGBK ink tank.
If all of those options did not resolve the issue, the printer would need service. The printer has a 1 year warranty and you can create a Canon account using the link HERE, to check your service options
