my PIXMA was bought midyear 2014 and has seen light use with many periods of time (3 or more months) with no use at all. I have tried every cleaning protocol that is built into the machine and still I get blank spaces in printed documents. This is true even when I get good test print results except at the bottom of the sheet where there are just fade outs of the print.
I am wondering if I should just give up and buy a new machine.

Because the issue still persists, your PIXMA MG7720 would require service. Please note, repairing the printer may cost more than replacing it.

Please try cleaning the encdoer/timing strip. To do this, please follow the steps in this article:

If the issue persists, your PIXMA MG7720 would require service. You are eligible for Canon's Upgrade Program. This is for out of warranty units which have been diagnosed to require service, or for some reason are incompatible with a new or upgraded system. This option allows you a one-time opportunity to purchase a replacement product, discounted from the list price.

Hi Patrick, I tried what you suggested and worked at it diligently and very carefully.
It didn't work. All that happened is no black ink was printed on the test sheet and the colors all showed up as rather weak. I tried two or three deep cleanings and checked all the cartridges to be sure they had ink. I checked the black ones to be sure the part where the ink is distributed to the mechanism that prints was wet, and it was.
So, is it possible that this Pixma and run its course and no longer works without a major repair or replacement is best?

I am still hoping for a response because I am guessing that when one tries all that you suggest and gets no benefit then it may mean it is time to give up. I am looking for some reassurance that my logic is good and replacing the machine is not a hasty move or an unnecessary waste.
