My MG7720 stopped working and I now have quite a few surplus Genuine Canon ink cartridges type 271/270. If I purchase a newer model Canon desktop printer, will Canon take back my unused ink?

Canon generally doesn't accept returns of opened/unused cartridges, even if genuine ones, back directly to them.
You may be able to return or exchange through the retailer where you bought them (if you've had the purchase very recently, some may offer returns or exchanges). Canon does recycle used cartridges, but they don't "buy back" surplus.

Ther are not opened; they're still in Canon packages. Anyway, I was planning to try Office Depot where I bought the printer many moons ago, and a lakefull of ink afterwards. If they don't rise to the occasion, then I sure won't buy another Canon printer.

NO manufacturer buys back ink, maybe the store where you purchased it might, if you bought the ink there, and not long ago. I had a lot of new Brother Cartridges when my printer died. All the cartridges ended up in the trash, because the printer was ten years old and no new Brother printer used them.
