Error message

Hello-

I have a Canon Pixma MX922. It is giving me a B200 error, the carriage isn’t moving to the center, and the orange alarm light flashes 10 times. Does anyone know if it cost effective to try and repair this model (diagnose whether the printhead or another component has failed)? Thank you in advance.

A B200 error on the Canon PIXMA MX922 usually indicates a printhead or printhead-circuit failure. The 10 orange flashes are consistent with a serious printhead-related error. Since the carriage is not moving to the center, try this sequence:

  1. Turn the printer off with the Power button.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the printer and wall outlet.
  3. Remove any paper and open the top cover.
  4. Wait at least 10 minutes.
  5. With the printer still unplugged, gently check whether the carriage can slide along its rail.
    • Move it only if it moves easily.
    • Do not force it or pull on the ink cartridges.
  6. If it moves, slide it to the center and remove all ink cartridges.
  7. Remove the printhead:
    • Lift the cartridge-locking lever.
    • Lift the printhead straight out by its sides.
  8. Inspect for spilled ink, bent contacts, or debris. Clean the gold contacts on the printhead and inside the carriage very gently with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol. Let everything dry completely.
  9. Reinstall the printhead, lower the locking lever, and reinstall the cartridges.
  10. Close the cover, reconnect the printer, and turn it on.

If the carriage will not move at all, check for a jammed piece of paper, label, or foreign object around the carriage path. Also inspect the clear plastic encoder strip behind the carriage; don’t wipe or pull it unless necessary.

If B200 returns immediately, the printhead is probably defective. A final diagnostic test is to remove the printhead and power the printer on. If the error changes to a printhead-missing error, the logic board may still be functioning and replacing the printhead might help. If it remains B200 or the carriage never initializes, the printer’s logic board or carriage drive may have failed.

For an MX922, replacing the printhead can be uneconomical, especially if the unit also has carriage or board symptoms. Do not repeatedly power-cycle it, and don’t buy a printhead until confirming that the carriage can initialize.
