Does the MG6220 Wireless printer need to be physlically connected to a router in order for be accessed wireless?

No, It connected via wireless per the setup instructions.  The only wire to the MG6220 printer is the power cord.

The installation from the DVD also updated all of the Canon programs and registered my new printer.  I have answered my own question.
