To answer your question, reinstalling the software is not necessary. The printer blue light means the printer wifi is activated orange light means you have paper loaded. The printer is not flashing any errors. It looks like you lost wifi connection, which is why Windows does not detect it. One quick thing to try is leave the printer powered on and reboot your windows pc. This could clear the print que and the pc should look for the printer. I highly recommend you purchase a usb/printer cable they are not expensive at all:

What is the exact printer model number of your printer?  MG3600 is the series. When you say printer has given up, does it have flashing lights? Does it try to print or just sit there? Can windows detect the printer? Do you have a printer cable, which makes troubleshooting much easier? FYI, my printer is a Canon MG3620.

HI

Thanks for your questions. In response the only  model number on the printer is Canon Pixma MG3600 series, the green power light is on, the blue wifi light is on, the green light next to A4 paper is on. There are no other lights or flashing lights. Windows does detect the printer, from the print queue I eventually get the following message Printer in an error state. The only cable I have is the power cable.
