I have a Canon MX870 printer/scanner. My computer uses Windows 7 Ultimate. 64-bit Operating System. I do wireless printing and scanning. Until recently, everything worked fine when scanning on the platen using the "scan" and "color" buttons on the printer. Now when I attempt to scan using the same buttons. I receive a message on the printer LCD screen which reads, "Set the PC to start scanning!" I re-downloaded the driver and also re-downloaded the MP Navigator EX software, but it failed to solve the problem. What do I need to do to get my printer to scan again using its own buttons? Note: I can only scan from the printer if I open on my PC the MP Navigator EX software window. However, this takes too long and doesn't fix the problem. Can anyone help me. I'm a non-technical user. Thanks!

Hi DavidSRubin,
The Canon IJ Network Scan Utility will need to be running on in order to scan wirelessly over the network. To launch the IJ Network Scan Utility, from the Start menu, select (All) Programs > Canon IJ Network Utilities > Canon IJ Network Scan Utility > Canon IJ Network Scan Utility. When launched, it will appear in the task tray of your computer as shown below:
In the notification area of the taskbar, right-click the Canon IJ Network Scan Utility icon and select Settings.... to open the Canon IJ Network Scan Utility dialog box. Select Canon MX870 ser_XXXXXXXXXXXX and click OK.
More information on scanning using the operation panel of the printer can be found here.
Hope this helps!

This is driving me nuts. It used to work i.e. press the printer's scan button to save to PC but my HD recently failed and I've had to reinstall windows 10. MX876 connnected via USB. I've used the latest MP drivers, but IJ network scan apparently doesnt install and its not in the folder indicated. How do I get this working again?

So 10 seconds later I had a brainwave. You have to install MP drivers as wireless rather than USB. Then the IJ network scan utility installs and the scan buttons on the printer connect to the computer. Not sure why they don't work if you use USB though ...
