CANON MP250 - Can't Use Scanner Capability

i have a canon mp250 printer and scanner. the printer is connected already to my macbook air, my problem is why can't I use the canner it comes with? what can do i do? please help, i have been searching for solutions on how to use my scanner and i have not found a solution. I was able to use the scanner in my previous laptop which had windows. why is it so difficult to use the same device on macbook?
