Help. I have a Canon R7 bought in the spring of 2024. Firmware 1.3.2 I should download firmware and I see there is 1.40, 1.50, 1.60 so do need to download all of them? I did download 160 I got a manual, but no grey bar. I did click on the three dots - and clicked on the item - and this what I get.(See below) I clicked on the second one and asks what file do I want to use to open it I am offered Media Player, Word, Word Perfect, and all sorts of programs that do not apply to the firmware. I have a Windows 11 desktop.
I am confused and need assistance about the firmware - and where does the firmware igo on my computer - so I can put it on my memory card and what is the root directory Thanks Marlene Koenig

Greetings Marlene,
Firmware is cumulative. Just download the latest and go from the version you are on now v1.3.2 > to the latest 1.6.0 Please review the update instructions in the folder above. It looks like you may have started to do that.
You will copy the .FIR file from the file you downloaded to the root directory of your SD card. The root means top level directory, not inside a folder.

You download the firmware from the camera's support portal.
Canon Support for EOS R7 | Canon U.S.A., Inc.
Select downloads, Windows and your version of windows.. 10, 11 they are the same. The firmware is specific to your camera, not your operating system.
The file will save to your downloads folder unless you tell it to save elsewhere. The file you downloaded is a winzip file. Its compressed. Right-click on it and select extract all. This will unpack the files for you. Open the updates procedure folder. Review the process. You'll copy the .FIR file to your SD Card.

I think you are missing the fact that the file you are downloading is compressed. It needs to extracted (unpacked). Now you will have access to the file's contents. The update procedure instructions to review, and the actual .FIR file which is the firmware you will use to update your camera. Don't give up, we'll get you there. 😀

Sir, this is not the answer I need. Two items in that file -- the manual which does not provide a link to down and the bottom one. There is nothing to unzip. When I click on it, it asks me where I want to the Fir it asks me what app I should choose? Why would I use Media player or Word or Word Perfect, which are listed as choices. That does not make sense. Isn't the point of the community forum to help someone else? thanks

Marlene,
The Zip file you have downloaded is compressed. It has to be "unpacked" or extracted in order to gain access to its contents.
To extract a zip file, you need to Right-click (right mouse button) to see the context menu with the extract command.
Please use the right mouse button and select "Extract All". "Why would I use Media player or Word or Word Perfect, which are listed as choices". (you don't). These are suggestions because windows doesn't recognize the .FIR file type. There is no application on your computer that can open a .FIR file, and you don't need one since your camera is the device capable of reading this file type. All you are doing is moving the .FIR file from the file you downloaded and unpacked to the SD card on your camera. This is not meant to be "tricky or difficult"
If this procedure is not something you feel comfortable with, it might be best for you to ask a friend or colleague for assistance. You can also contact Canon Support. They are going to tell you the same things I have. Their telephone number is 800-652-2666.
