EOS Utility options all grayed out

Had to reload computer.   After reloading EOS Utility (from original CD), the utility will load, but all options are grayed out,

have you tried downloading a newer version from the support website for your camera?

You need an updater for Windows version and a later version for macOS.

As alluded to, it is OS dependent. Looks like W8.1 or macOS 10.14 are the latest compatible OS versions.
