Camera: EOS R (Firmware 1.8.0)
OS: macOS Sequoia 15.5; (Apple M2 chip)
The goal is to use my camera as a webcam. I downloaded EOS Webcam Utility Pro V2.3d for this, but the utility was not recognizing the camera when I plugged it in. I looked for solutions but the most prominent one was to exit out of the "EOS Utility" program. I didn't even have that installed, so I decided to install EOS Utility 3.19.0 for macOS, but even that could not connect to the camera. For clarity, I am only trying to run one application at a time, I double checked my camera access permissions and they seem to be set correctly. I am also double checking this on a windows computer and running into the same issue.
There is no error messages that pop up. This is what the EOS utility screen looks like:
And this is what the camera looks like:
This is a time sensitive matter for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

1. Does Apple Image Capture see your camera?
2. Any other software running that could be seeing your camera, like Dropbox or One Drive?

Hi jrhoffman75, thank you for the reply!
I opened up Apple Image Capture, it was able to see my camera and photos just fine!
In regards to other software I am trying my best to make sure nothing else could be potentially using it. I tried to turn off any program that could potentially be using it. I noticed activity monitor would show another camera related service called "EOSWebcamService" that seems to be always running in the background, weather EOS Utility is running or not. I've tried to kill this service but it keeps coming back.
I captured all the processes using `ps aux` and here are the canon / eos related outputs

Not sure if it is helpful, but here is a link to my full process list. I uploaded a text file to google drive.
Also, not sure if its relevant or not, but I'm putting here to be more verbose than too sparse, I've noticed when I restart EOS Utility with the camera already connected I get this error pop up.
Not sure if this is from the "EOSWebcamService" process. It seems to be always running, even if the camera is not connected. I even tried uninstalling EOS Webcam Utility, and the process seems to be running. It could just be a process from EOS Utility itself...

Are you wanting top use EOSU to download images only or for additional capabilities? If just download I recommend just using Image Capture.
Did you try restarting the computer after shutting down and deleting the webcam utility?

I am trying to use my EOS R as a webcam, and in order to do that I need EOS Webcam Utility to work. Before I even got that to work, I was trying to get just the EOS Utility to work by itself, since I figured it came with the camera drivers or something.
I have tried multiple reboots during my debugging to see if it would fix anything. After uninstalling EOS Webcam Utility and rebooting the system, I still see the "EOSWebcamService" running in the background with Activity Monitor, even if EOS Utility is not running.

Sequoia 15.5 was just recently released as a Beta Release, not an official update.
06-19-2025 02:43 PM
Released for update mid-May.

Wow. Release 15.5 has already been superseded by a new Beta. Who can keep up. In six weeks time, Canon has fallen (4) releases behind.

It is worth mentioning that this issue also persists even on a windows machine. Its as if the EOS software itself does not currently support the EOS R or something. It boggles my mind to think that Cannon does not do regression testing on its own software to ensure compatibility among its cameras. Its sad that something as simple as using a Cannon camera for a streaming event is just not possible. Looks like I'm going to have to borrow someone's Sony...
