CLOG2 In-camera Recording

After reviewing some of my Canon C70 footage I noticed that the highlights would clip before they reached 100% on the waveform. After some research I found a Canon white paper stating that even though clog2 has a 6400% maximum dynamic range, in-camera recording is limited to a maximum of 1600%. That is a difference of two stops of dynamic range. I was wondering why that is? Would it be possible for Canon to expand the dynamic range of in-camera recording in order to utilize the entire clog2 curve?

My understanding is this.  DR is limited by the processing power and readout speed of the sensor which is currently 14 to 16 stops depending on the recording format.

Interesting. I guess that explains why cinema cameras are so large and require such robust cooling solutions.

Why cooling is needed.  It's actually a combination of things. Storage media can get warm due to the bandwidth requirements of hi-res video.  Heat is also generated by the digic X processor.  Cooling helps ensure the camera can perform continuously at a sustained performance level.

My original question pertained mostly to the Canon C70 and whether or not it had the potential to shoot in the full clog2 range, but you pretty much answered it already.
