EOS 7D Mark II cable needed for connection to Monitor/TV for instant playback

Hi folks,

(I am not too clued-up on the correct techie terms). Whilst doing a shoot, I want to tether my 7Dii to my MBPro. I now have this cable to undertake that part.

What I want to achieve:-
Importantly, I want to setup an independent TV/Monitor on a rolling-stand for guests to view that shoot in real-time.

Now, down to “you” - what cable(s) and from where can I get that/them??

Cable length 4metres maximum, the cable quality around mid-to-good. Anything sub-$60.00 if possible.

Would it make more sense to simply buy a HDMI multi-port hub for both HDMI-In & HDMI-Out ports connected via USB to my laptop?

There are a couple of approaches…

Get a long mini HDMI to HDMI cable, plug the mini end in the EOS 7D Mark II and the other in to the TV. You can shoot, and have the camera set to HOLD the review image on the screen. The Tv will show what is the last image until you press a button on the camera.

Second slightly more complex option is to use a long USB cable to connect the camera to the MacBook. On the MacBook install and run EOS Utility. Set up EOS Utility to show the preview screen, so that the most recent image is displayed. Plug a HDMI cable from the MacBook to the TV. Set the MacBook to mirror its screen on the TV. When you take a photo, the image is stored on the memory card and transferred to the computer where it is displayed on both laptop screen and TV.

One of the benefits of using EOS Utility in this second setup is that it can be configured to transfer only the JPG image to the computer if your camera is set to capture RAW + JPG. JPGs being smaller files will transfer much faster than RAW even over a cable. I often use small or sometimes medium JPGs as they still have more resolution that the computer or TV screen.

There is also a W-E1 wifi card for the EOS 7D Mark II, it effectively allows you to replace the USB cable with a wifi link between camera and computer. But it is a little more complex to setup and speed is slower.

Brian - you genius!

I really appreciate these clear instructions.

My favoured approach will be the second option as I have the EOS s/w already installed & working. Just need to buy a long enough mini-HDMI cable.
The ‘audience’ will see the jpg file numbers and will note those down as the images to edit & keep for their portfolio. The viewing monitor is a simple 1080p TV. Once I build up a reputation & funds I will allocate a dedicated 4k TV display for this purpose.

Agreed - the wireless option might be sluggish and also adds a further ‘risk’ of introducing an unwanted “Live-hiccup”.

I already have this hub, so I can add additional TVs / Monitors as and when required.
