Canon A-1 Auto Winder not working

Kyle7
Apprentice

Yes, this is an old camera. Either way, I have an A2 power winder (which I know is working), and it will not wind on my A-1. I am not opposed to taking it apart to find the problem, I just have no idea where to start. The camera works and has charge, it’s just that the winder is not getting the signal when the shutter is pressed. Some help would be appreciated!

Ok, solved it. Inside the camera, there are pins above the winder that have contact with gold plates. One was bent, not allowing current to flow when the shutter is fired. Pics are attached. If anyone has any power issues with on and off, power winder or timer issues, this area is the place to check.

Would it likely fire the shutter even with a bad motor?

Certainly can. Two separate operations, one electrical and one mechanical, with motor and gears that can jam.

Thanks for your reply. Hopefully the second MA drive will work correctly.

The second MA drive didnÄt work either. It was the model with the Ni--Cad batteries and I missed that in the photos. I read the description very carefully, but no mention was made of it being the NiCad model, and no mention of needing, or not including a charger. Unless these batteries were new, IÄd be hard pressed to believe 40 year old NiCads would even take a charge let alone hold it.

Back it went too. I am in communication with yet a third seller and explained what has happened. He is getting a battery for his A-1 and told me he would thoroughly test the motor drive and let me know of the results before making a decision about buying.

I didn't think it would be this difficult.

Finally a working MA Motor drive. This one came from Japan in mint condition. The chap I was in communication with about his motor drive discovered that one of the ears on the battery holder was cracked. I passed on it.

The seller in Japan had an extensive video she posted of all parts and the motor drive working on the camera.

That sold me.
