I've read through a numbrer of other posts here for different camera with seemingly no solution. This "appears" to be a software, not a mechanical issue as the unit will zoom out while resting, nobody at the controls. I didn't see anything address it in the firmware update (last one in 2016). Any help or links to a solution would be greatly appreciated.

Hi my XA30 had this issue, on researching I found out the line has an issue where they did not put the switch transducer (the sensor) in a sealed housing. (I run a nano-fabrication clean room). Try this. Used compressed air (a can with the small plastic tube to aim the air) into the switch to blow out dust. Alternatively, use a remote zoom switch (they cost between $60 and $200). Finally, if you are very careful, you can take off 3 body panels and clean the switch from the bottom. Hope this helps.
