Well, many camcorders have a filter that blocks most light outside of the visible spectrum. The brightness of your IR light should be sufficient to show up if you point it directly at the lens of the camera, but I can't imagine seeing anything reflected off of surfaces. You can remove the filter from the image sensor, but that would require disassembling the camera. Make sure you buy a special screwdriver so you don't strip the screwheads.
