I had th Scanner not available error again. This time I unplugged the printer for about an hour and then when I tried it again, no problem! Hopefully this will work for me again next time and for others.

Well, my problem fixed itself. I never did find time to have an extended call with Canon support. So, I used my old 8600f flatbed scanner when necessary, which still worked, and then a year went by... Then, it happened that I upgraded to El Capitan...
