Elph 300 HS shows communication error when connected to computer?

Hello, When I connect my Elph 300 HS to the computer via USB it shows a communication error and the computer does not seem to register that it is connected. Any thoughts on how to fix this?Thanks,MZM

I have tried on both OSX and Windows 7 and get the same response each time. I have a lot of photos on there, could that be the problem?
