How much play should there be in the end end of the lens away from the camera body?

I have an EF 16-35 mm 2.8 L II USM lens that has some use, but not extensive. The end of the barrel seems to have an unreqasonable (to me) amount of play in it. How much should I put up with?

Thanks for the reply, but all I can really say is that it is way more than the other lenses I have, and they too are all L series lenses.
