I fixed the battery problem.  I returned the camera.  No camera, no battery problem!

Well, in my opinion, it is immaterial whether the firmware update is successfull or not.  Canon does not solve the problem.

Performed the firmware update.  Took a long video.  No problems.  Looks like to me that the upgrade worked.
