Hi guys, I'm new to the world of external flashes/ strobes etc. I have a 430ex. I'm looking for compatible triggers & receivers. My body is the Rebel T6. What can you suggest?

There are three versions of the Speedlite 430EX

The original Speedlite 430EX, then the 430EX II and finally the Speedlite 430EX III-RT so the choices for triggers depends on the specific model you have.

All three units can be used on the hotshoe of your camera without any trouble.

Speedlite 430EX will require you to make the settings on the Speedlite itself, as it does not support settings from the camera menu.

Speedlite 430EX II and Speedlite 430EX III-RT can both be configured using the camera menu, or the buttons on the Speedlite.

For off-camera flash you will need a suitable trigger, all three units can work with optical wireless and the Speedlite 430EX III-RT also supports radio wireless operation.

Triggers that work on the camera with the 430EX series off-camera and in optical wireless include

  • Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2
  • Speedlite 550EX
  • Speedlite 580EX / Speedlite 580EX II
  • Speedlite 600EX / 600EX II / 600EX-RT / 600EX II-RT
  • Speedlite EL-1
  • Speedlite EL-100

If your unit is the Speedlite 430EX III-RT it can be remotely controlled with radio wireless, and for that you need one of the following on the camera.

  • Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3 (any of the three versions)
  • Speedlite 600EX-RT / 600EX II-RT
  • Speedlite EL-1

If you choose to sidestep the Canon kit, then you need a transmitter on the camera an a receiver module to attach to your 430EX. I have had some success with Godox X-PRO and the Godox X1R receiver units.

Will the pop up flash on the Rebel T6 trigger an external flash?

The Rebel T6 pop up flash does not have the ability to act as a sender (master) and trigger a Speedlite using optical wireless
