Speedlite 430EX and R100 unable to fire under any settings

Hi all

I’m trying to use my Speedlite 430EX with my EOS R100.

I’m aware that the flash menu isn’t compatible with the speedlite but I have not been able to get the speedlite to fire under any settings. I have tried shooting in manual, AV and scene auto modes. I have set the flash to M and ETTL modes in every possible iteration

The lock pin appears to extend and retract properly. I am able to lock down the flash and the pilot light comes on when I power it up.

Is there something I’m missing? I know the flash is old but the connectors should be compatible?

Thanks!

The shutter mode can’t be set full electronic because the flash won’t fire. Set the shutter mode to mechanical or electronic first curtain. Also the camera should display all of the flash’s settings. Even though it’s an older flash unit it will only show you basic information about the settings. If this is the original 430EX. The camera will display the flash functions screen though.

Thank you for the fast reply! As far as I know, the r100 doesn’t have these shutter settings? I have tried non auto (P, M, AV) modes which I believe are EFC shutter.

I’m at a loss at what might be the problem.

The flash and camera appear to function properly and are correctly connected as far as I can tell.

The 430EX should be compatible.  If the flash is not not connecting to the camera and waking up menus in the camera, then turn on the flash mounted on the shoe before you turn on the camera.

The original 430EX IS NOT COMPATIBLE with the speedlite control menu. The flash predates its creation in 2007. As a general rule any Canon speedlite released before 2007 is INCOMPATIBLE with the menu. The 270EX430EX II 580EX II were the first speedlites to this new 2 way communication. The OP should at least see the picture below. The Speedlite CF Menu also won’t be available. The camera will say INCOMPATIBLE Speedlite or it’s turned off. But the speedlite should work as normal. You just have to change settings on the speedlite itself. FEC can also be set from the camera menu. As long if it’s not already set on the flash.

I would check that the camera is set correctly to fire the flash. There is a setting in the camera that stops the flash firing.

See this section of the EOS R100 manual, make sure the flash is set to fire, not auto or disabled.
