Does anybody know what it means when the flash exposure confirmation light is on red all the time - even when the flash is turned off? Just recently as soon as I put batteries in my flash this light is on & never goes off - is it time for a new flash?

It sounds like your speedlite needs repair then. But Canon no longer repairs it anymore. So a 3rd Party will have to repair it. Or replacement maybe warranted if it can't be fixed. Does the speedlite still work as normal. Except for the light being on all the time.

Original 430EX
430EX II
430EX III/ III-RT

So the light that is constantly on red is the flash exposure confirmation light on your images of the 430EX & 430EX II

Can you change speedlite settings via the speedlite control menu on the camera. Or can you ONLY do it from the camera. Also do you have the quick release lock. Or do you have the kind the you spin to tighten it to the hot shoe. Also what camera are you using this speedlite on. Are you using it on a camera released in 2007 or newer camera. Or one an older camera one released before 2007.

Thanks again Demetrius - I'm using it on a Canon 5D Mark III, so newer than 2007. I have only ever changed settings on the flash itself. The light is on as soon as I put batteries in, so when its nowhere near the camera & while the flash is still turned off

How does the speedlite attach to the camera. Is it a quick release lever. Ie you move it from left to right to lock it in place. Or do you have to spin the the lock and tighten it down.

You spin the lock to tighten it down

Then you have the original 430EX. The 430EX II brought compatibly with the speedlite control (in camera flash menu) and the quick release lever. Attach and detach the speedlite.

It makes no difference if the speedlite is attached or detached, turned on or turned off, the red light is on constantly as soon as batteries go in the flash

Thanks again Demetrius, it does still flash but then the settings re-set every time & if I leave the batteries in they'll just be getting drained - I guess its time for a new flash unit
