I have an EOS R50 and I'm trying to find a used flash somewhere that works for it, but I've read that the compatibility on this camera is kind of weird. Are there any inexpensive adapters, or less expensive flashes that work on it?

What is your budget for a flash. The Canon EL-10 is a good flash and it’s natively compatible. There is only one adapter that Canon makes. To use all older style flashes and Canon flashes.

There are currently three "flash devices" that will work directly on the EOS R50 camera.
To be able to use more generic or older Canon Speedlites then you need to fit the Canon AD-E1 hotshoe adapter to the camera first as mentioned by Demetrius.

what kind of flash will fit onto the adapter?

Virtually any other kind of flash except the three mentioned above.
If you want automatic flash exposure without problems then you are best to choose a Canon Speedlite. There are several Canon units I would suggest…
You can also use flashes from other brands, but often there are some incompatibilities that make them not work as well as the Canon flashes.
