I would have thought this would be a common question but I can't find it in the manual or the forum: can you set the speedlite to continuous (or bulb) light? So use it as a simple continuous light source. Thanks for letting me know.

Not "continuous". Flashes with built-in modeling lights usually have a 2nd bulb -- so you'd have a flash bulb and modeling bulb.
The flash (and actually most Canon flashes) will provide a short 1 second duration light (achieved by very rapid flashing at low power). This is activated by pressing the depth-of-field preview button your camera when the flash is attached and powered up.
