Ramsden, are you using AF or focusing manually?

I was struggling to get the tomato's in focus because the green was sort of translucent. The camera was set up in Manual, but I was playing around in the garden, and kept trying AF to see if it improved. I think that shot was AF, as I've just checked my camera and that was the last shot I took and its still in AF

It was ISO 1000. f/4.0 and 1/250

Its not a very good photograph, but (not an excuse) I was just trying different lens and settings having watched a few YouTube

Feedback welcome

If I showed you some of my images from last week you would say to yourself.....cool everyone has the same challenges with Macro. I little movement and it changes your focus point.

The reason I asked, if you are shooting manual have you tried focus peaking. It’s different on the 90D then mirror-less because you have to go into live view and the lens in manual. If I remember correctly from my time with the 90D it only works with the LCD, I could be mistaken. The mirror-less systems allow you to use the EVF.

If you are not familiar it will highlight your subject (edges) in a color (I always use red) when the subject or area you want is in focus.

Shooting Menu 6, select MF peaking settings, and turn the peaking display ON. You can customize the highlight color, I think it was red, blue and yellow.

I use focus peaking frequently when shooting macro. Something else to play with if you haven’t already.

Good morning Marc

Thanks for your feedback.

MF peaking is one of those features in the menu that I haven't fully understood. Now you've explained it, I can see how it will work in these close up situations, because I can remember from yesterday, with the wind blowing the plants, the point of focus kept moving. I had your blade of grass in mind.

More practice, and perhaps, like you said earlier, if its too windy, don't bother going out! (I paraphrase).

Hi again Marc

I find the first screenshot a bit confusing.

Disable after One Shot AF off

Enable after One Shot AF on

Please explain the logic

Then my second screen shot shows the current settings- which, I have to admit I've probably played around with, without really knowing what I'm doing.

I suppose that with any camera you have to learn how it works to get the best out of it. But then I just chuck the bag on my shoulder and go for a walk without thinking what lens and settings I need! Perhaps that's a good starting point.

And I've just switched the Lens electronic MF to On!

Ramsden,

I am not familiar with the first screen shot, the second screen shot is where you set up Peaking.

Make sure you have the lens on manual by switching it on/off the barrel of the lens, it looks like you are attempting to do it through the menu.

  • Switch your lens to Manual Focus (MF) on the barrel of the lens
  • Turn on Live View (rear LCD screen)
  • Press the MENU button, navigate to the Shooting Tab (Red), select page 6, go to MF peaking settings to turn it on Enable
  • The level adjusts the sensitivity of edge detection, I always use high
  • Set color to Red

Again, this is from memory and I am not sure what that first image is that you posted.

Also, I believe you can use the magnifying glass on the touch screen to zoom in while using peaking.

Hi Marc

Certainly not.

I don't do social media, but I find this community really helpful and positive. I'm sat at home at the moment,  because its too hot for a walk, and guess what, I'm re-reading a chapter in my EOS90D book on MF and AF settings. And as you well know, its more complicated than it looks.

A more important thing at the moment is that dpp on ipad doesn't do stacking and another app  is the same. So if I want to use stacking I'll probably end up getting a laptop. So any advice on reasonable spec and price would be helpful.

Best
