Friday night football

Last night I shot football in a very poorly illuminated stadium. The lights are dim, old, and mixed between high pressure sodium and mercury vapor types so the color temperature is both time and field position dependent.

Usually for football, my setup is an EF 400 f2.8 on the 1DX III and an EF 70-200 f2.8 on the 1DX II but for this game I used a three camera setup with an EF 200 f2 on the 1DX II and an EF 85 f1.8 on the 1DX to take advantage of the faster primes over a f2.8 zoom.

The extra stop makes a difference in poor lighting and the nearly decade old 1DX still performs very well for low light action photography but managing three cameras is NOT fun.

First photo shot with a 1DX III/EF 400 combo @ f2.8, 1/800, ISO 1,600.

Second photo shot with a 1DX II/EF 200 f2 combo @ f2, 1/800, ISO 20,000

Third photo shot with a 1DX/EF 85 f1.8 combo @ f2, 1/640, ISO 16,000

Fourth photo shot with a 1DX III/EF 400 combo @ f2.8, 1/800, ISO 10,000

The 1DX III is the best at high ISO action but its older siblings do the job.
