A Buff-Tailed Coronet (Boissonneaua flavescens) perches with quiet poise on a moss-clad branch in the cloud forest of La Minga Ecolodge, Dapa, Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Its iridescent green back and warm buff-colored tail stand out crisply against the muted tones of ferns and mist. Subtle highlights along the throat feathers reveal a gentle copper wash, while the softened background emphasizes the bird’s intricate plumage.
This photograph was crafted using a Canon EOS R5 paired with the RF100–500mm lens at 500mm and a 1.4× extender, which necessitated an aperture of f/16 for edge-to-edge sharpness. Setting ISO 800 balanced the low-light conditions under the dense canopy without introducing excessive noise. The camera determined a shutter speed of 1/125 second, providing ample speed to freeze the slightest shift in posture while handheld. Achieving this frame required steady breathing, patient framing, and a respectful distance to observe natural behavior without disturbance.
Beyond the technical considerations, this image embodies a philosophy of conservation-minded photography. La Minga’s community-led reforestation and habitat-monitoring initiatives create the living backdrop for species like the Buff-Tailed Coronet. Each photograph serves as both an artistic expression and a reminder of the partnerships that protect these fragile ecosystems.
