The Acorn Woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus) is a species known for its striking appearance and fascinating behavior. This photograph was taken at La Minga Ecolodge, near Cali, Colombia, a biodiverse haven in the Andean foothills. The lodge is surrounded by lush vegetation and offers ideal conditions for observing and photographing a wide array of bird species.
This image captures the woodpecker perched on a moss-covered tree trunk, its vibrant plumage contrasting beautifully against the muted greens of the blurred background. The bird’s distinctive features, including its glossy black wings, bright red crown, and pale yellow throat, stand out sharply in the frame. The sharpness of the bird’s feathers and the texture of the moss add depth to the composition, drawing the viewer into the scene.
To create this photograph, I used the Canon R5 camera paired with a 100-500mm lens, set at 500mm for a close and detailed perspective. The exposure settings were 1/2000 second at ISO 800, with an aperture of f/7.1. The high shutter speed was necessary to capture the bird’s sudden movements, while the ISO setting ensured clarity in the natural light conditions of the forest. The advanced image stabilization of the lens helped maintain sharpness even at the extended focal length.
Photographing this Acorn Woodpecker was not just a technical exercise but a meaningful experience. The species plays an essential role in its ecosystem, storing acorns in “granary trees” that support other animals. Witnessing this behavior in the wild, while being immersed in the serene environment of La Minga, reinforced my commitment to conservation photography. Moments like these are reminders of the delicate balance of nature and the importance of preserving habitats like those found in Colombia’s Andean region.
