R5C not turning on, Red light!

Hello, had the R5C about 3 weeks now. I just finished shooting a music promotional video for a local business. Went really well. Had someone use my XF605 for the wide shot and I was handheld with my R5C rig. Shot both cameras xfavc 10 bit with Canon 709 profile. I used a Smallrig V mount battery to power the R5C by usb-c and a field monitor by dummy battery. After I downloaded the footage, which I was having trouble playing in Premiere, I put a Canon battery back into the R5C to look at some of the video media in camera again. The light came on by the grip and stayed red. The camera would not turn on in video or photo mode. I tried a couple more fully charged batteries and the same thing. Red light stayed on and camera would not power on. I then hooked the v-mount battery back by usb-c and the same thing. Camera would not start up. Finally tried the Canon battery one last time and it powered on. I hope this doesn’t happen again. I still have time to return it for another although I have a wedding to shoot in a couple weeks. Any idea on this one?

Problem solved. I called Canon support EOS Cinema and got tremendous help for my question. So after I explained the series of events and the red light staying on, the tech said he was 99% sure the issue was the CF card. Not that there was anything wrong with the card, just that the file structures get moved around and the R5C is hung up on trying to read it. This did happen after I downloaded my footage and put the card back in the camera, so makes sense. The solution is to reformat the card and any new CF cards in the computer as ExFat and then Initialize the card in the camera as usual. I just received a new Angelbird AV PRO SE CFexpress v4 Type B card from B&H today and will be formatting it before initializing in camera.

Greetings,

I believe all of small rigs v-mount batteries are capable of powering the R5 C successfully. Some of their battery plate models do not.  The camera requires at minimum 65w, 3A, and 9 volts.

It's important that the cable you are using is properly rated for power delivery (USC-C PD).

Out of curiosity, what firmware version are you running?  I would recommend 1.0.9.1 at minimum.  If you need solid time code support, I recommend 1.1.0.1.

Hi Shadowsports,

The Small Rig v-mount battery works fine.

It's the camera that did not power on with same batteries I've been using, the V-Mount, LP-E6P and the LP-E6NH. I think there was some battery recognition issue in the camera. Red light stayed on, camera nothing. Maybe after using the v-mount for a few hours it could not recognize power with just the Canon battery. Like I said after trying 3 other Canon batteries and the V-mount, then back to just the Canon battery it finally came on. I obviously can't have this happening on a client shoot. Hopefully it is something simple like in the order I'm using power or something.

I'm using firmware 1.1.0.1
