My camera is XF405. To lock exposure I switch to M then select FUNC +/- * which locks the exposure. But when I select * again it should cancel the exposure lock, but it doesn't. It is now permanently set to lock exposure. What is wrong?

I should add that the little vertical orange line on the left of the star will turn on and off, but the exposure remains locked. When the orange line is present you can vary the exposure by sliding the scale at the bottom of the screen, and when the orange line is not present you cannot, but either way the camera will not respond to changes in the ambient light. Update: an M appeared on the left of the screen, I touched it and now the problem is cured! That M is no longer visible. Can anyone explain what is going on?

The M is not visible whether the exposure is locked or unlocked.
