no driver anymore for MP240 on windows 11 ??!!!

Dear Canon Support Team,

I am writing to you as a loyal and satisfied user of the Canon MP240 printer. This device has served me faithfully since its purchase and continues to function perfectly for my needs. However, I was recently disappointed to learn that Canon has decided to discontinue updating drivers for this model.

I understand that technological progress often means moving towards newer models. However, this decision is particularly disheartening for several reasons. Firstly, the planned obsolescence of devices leads to excessive consumption, which does not align with the principles of sustainability and environmental responsibility. Secondly, on a personal note, I currently do not have the financial means to invest in a new printer. The MP240 meets my current needs perfectly, and being forced to replace it due to software support issues seems unfair.

My specific concern at this moment is the lack of driver support for Windows 11 for the MP240. As the operating systems evolve, it becomes crucial for users like me to have compatible drivers to ensure our hardware continues to function effectively.

I appeal to your consideration to revisit this decision. By continuing to support the MP240 with necessary driver updates, especially for Windows 11, Canon would not only demonstrate its commitment to customer satisfaction and loyalty but also its respect for sustainable and ethical practices.

Thanks for letting us know what Canon product you've got. The PIXMA MP240 is an older model which we have retired. While that means that Canon USA no longer offers direct support for it, your friends here in the Canon Community are welcome to offer suggestions!

Furthermore, my financial situation does not allow me to purchase a new printer model. It is disappointing to see a company of your stature not considering the real needs of its customers, indirectly forcing them to replace still-functional equipment.

As a result, I am compelled to reconsider my support for Canon. I will no longer recommend your products and will not consider purchasing another Canon printer in the future. This decision is taken with regret but reflects my stance on responsible and environmentally friendly business practices. I hope Canon will reevaluate its policies in the future to better meet its customers' expectations and current environmental challenges.

I've just registered for this to answer as it bugs me too that they make the printer obsolete on purpose.

I've found a solution. I've downloaded the latest driver for win 8.1 (md64-win-mp240-1_02-ea24). Before install, go to settings -> compatibility and choose win 7 (win 8 was not working for me). Save and run as administrator. Once it finished power off the printer, remove from usb. Plug back and switch on. In printer settings I've switched off that windows detect the default printer. Now its working. For scanning the win 11 scanner program works just fine.

Maybe its late, but maybe it will help for others in the future 🙂

Not sure why someone would immediately assume this was done on purpose or with intent?

It wasn't.

The printer is 10 yrs old and has reached the end of its support lifecycle.  Parts are no longer being manufactured.  Canon doesn't manufacture every part needed to build a product; some are sourced from 3rd parties.  If a company stops making them, Canon can no longer service the device.   

10 years is a very reasonable amount of time for software and hardware support.  Canon, Epson, Sharp, Dell, Microsoft, Google and Apple (for example) all use a similar model.  10 years is typical, an industry standard.

Most people are not using a computer or cell phone for 10 years.  A printer is no different.

NGotti did bring up a good point.  Drivers written for an earlier version of windows or MAC (might) work with a newer version of the OS.  Not in every case depending on the architecture, but its worth a try. 

Products cannot be supported indefinitely.  😃

Totally agree with You... 10 year for a printer is way more than expected (for me at least). Most of the electronics these days barely make after the guarante period. But here not the availability of parts was questioned, rather the solution provided. Saying sorry, your printer is obsolete but You can buy a new one... This was done on purpose or with intent. But hey, they left it open; Community are welcome to offer suggestions, so here I am, providing solution, what could be done by them as they more of an expert than me for sure :).
