Networked mf216n, bare metal install Win11 Pro 24H2, won't scan
Before rebuilding my computer, Win10 Pro and the mf216n worked flawlessly.
Tried the newest driver, dated 1-14-25, with the patch they suggested. Still won't scan.
The printer sees the computer, Toolbox says no scanner installed. Only one entry in Device manager for the mf216n.
The Windows Scan app now works.
Any suggestions?
And when does Canon finally get this solved?

Fourth computer now has gone over to 24H2 and still no scanning. Tried the preview update; still no scanning apart from the Windows app. Most current firmware installed; no difference.
Anybody got a good idea what's going on here? Some have jumped through hoops with other models and got their scans to work.

Hi PCW,
I just built a brand new Windows 11, 24H2 PC. I installed the software for my mf656 and tested the MF scan utility. It worked, I made no changes.
In your initial post you indicated you installed drivers and the "recommend patch"... What patch are you referring to? There's no patch for Windows 11. The patch I found was released in 2017, and is for previous installs of windows OS where the OS version was upgraded. Doesn't have anything to do with Windows 11.
The scanning issue introduced with feature release 24H2 could have more than one cause and may be affected depending on the connection type you are using.
Please try the following.
Open Device Manager, expand Imaging Devices. Right click on all instances of your printer and select disable from the context menu. No if you've only used one connection type, you will only have one listing, if you have used multiple interfaces, you may have more than one entry.
Right click on the entry or entries you have one at a time. Select "update driver" from the context menu. Allow Windows to search and update.
If the update completed successfully, close the dialogues and restart your computer. Now retest the MF Scan Utility and ScanGear.
What are the results?

Canon's own page for the mf216n when I tell it I have Windows 11:
I've tried with and without the patch.
Just to triple check I tried once again the Device Manager driver update on the bare metal 24H2 install and an updated laptop. Both didn't work. Each 24H2 will print and do single scans with the MS Scan app.
Perhaps an earlier model/ lower end model like the mf216n has something different about it?
I do thank you for your help. Any other suggestions?

Out of curiosity... Does the Toolbox automatically call up ScanGear? Entering it into the Windows start screen I see a Readme, but nothing about a ScanGear app to run.
Puzzled in Seattle,
Paul

Greetings,
Thanks for providing the screenshot. Clearly the mf216n bundles. Its software packages differently than other MF models. What threw me was not seeing the patch available under the Windows 11 heading, however, the description doesn't talk about the drivers, it only mentions installing the patch if you cannot scan over USB or network.
There is no separate launcher for ScanGear. It's launched through the MF scan utility or toolbox as you found. You appear to be following the correct steps.
What connection type are you using?
If applicable. If you're using wireless or ethernet, does your device have a static IP address assigned?

Yup, static IP.

At this point, who do I need to be talking to? Microsoft? Canon?
Thanks in advance,

Hi,
I have the same issue with the a networked mf216n and PCs with Win 11 Pro 24H2.
Just installed today Win 11 Pro 24H2 with the latest update; MF210MFDriverV450WPusEN and ToolBox4911mf18WinEN.
When using the MF Toolbox, an error message is displayed: ScanGear MF ; Cannot communicate with the scanner. The cable may be disconnected, or the scanner may be turned off. Check the scanner status and try again. Scanner driver will be terminated.
Was working fine with the previous version of Windows 11 and Windows 10.
Thanks for your help.

Instead of the MF Toolbox, I end up using Scanner by Simon Knuth, it supports multipage PDF scan.
But I hope that they fix the Toolbox as it's the official tools from Canon.
