imageCLASS MF455dw: cannot install network scanner

I have tried installing the software, the individual drivers, followed steps from other threads on this forum and cannot get this to work.

The laptop is running Windows 10, the scanner has a static IP address.

I've followed the steps here:
https://community.usa.canon.com/t5/Office-Printers/ImageClass-mf455dw-scanner-software-not-installed...

and when I run the installer (MF450MFDriverV720W64) it offers me to install the PCL6/PS3/etc printers and fax, but not a word about the scanner.

When I try to install the scanner app (winmfscanutilityv12102) the installer fails with some unusual message (literally an empty error message). From what I could figure out, it is dependent on the scanner driver being installed.

As a last resort, I manually installed the scanner driver, by opening Control Panel (thankfully still present in Win10), navigating to Scanners and Cameras, clicking Add Device, and selecting that I have disk, locating the drivers (under MF450MFDriverV720W64\intdrv\SCAN\x64\Driver folder). I could see the scanner in Device Manager after that (with an exclamation mark) and after that the scan utility installed. But scanning never worked.

The only thing I was able to get to work was connecting the printer via USB and scanning that way. But this is a shame - that's not why I have a network device. My previous HP and Samsung were flawless in that regard.

So - the question - how do I register or add a network scanner for MF455dw (with a known IP address)?

I am (or at least was) planning on buying a second printer of the same model, and was hoping that I could remotely scan from either one - but I need to somehow register the scanner with an IP address.

Any help or suggestion is greatly appreciated.

I've uninstalled the software, rebooted, reinstalled everything again - still no success.

Has anyone ever been able to get the scanner to work over network? If so how did you configure the IP address in the software?
