Trying to install drivers for PIXMA MX490 w/USB connection, cannot maintain connection

Hi all,

I've had a Pixma MX490 for several years, worked great with my old computer. Now that I'm switching to a new laptop that doesn't have a CD-Rom, I'm installing drivers on this one. I need to use the USB cable to connect it, and installation stalls at Set-up, at the point of printer connection. At first it will tell me the printer is connected, and to wait while installation is completed. It sits there for quite a while, then eventually tells me the printer isn't detected. I've tried deleting and re-installing the driver software, unplugging and replugging the USB cable, turning the printer off and on, restarting the computer, nothing is helping. I've never had a problem with my old computer and the USB cable connection. I can't get through on Canon support, none of their links on the website are working when I click them. Any help is appreciated, I need to work and this is wasting a ton of time. Thank you!

Hi Adrie_21!  Thanks for letting us know what Canon product you've got. The Pixma MX490 is an older model which we have retired. While that means that Canon USA no longer offers direct support for it, your friends here in the Canon Community are welcome to offer suggestions!

You can also speak with a Canon Upgrade Program specialist to help you score a modern replacement that would meet your current needs at a discount. You can reach them weekdays and Saturdays at 1-866-443-8002.

Hope this helps!

Wow, Ron, that is about the most useless response from a company there has ever been.  I found this post as I am having the same issue with the same product.  It use to worked, I upgraded my system which required a new OS install which means I had to install the printer again.   Now I am having trouble getting it installed and when I find a post with the same issue all you say is, to bad, it is old, we do not care.   Well I had already been thinking replacing it with another cannon was not a good idea and, well RON, you have settled it for me, cannon does not care one bit about its customers, so no more cannons for me ever again.  Seriously, was the only reason you responded to this was to try and push a new product?  It does NOT matter that you no longer make the product, it is still your product and you should support it.

*edit* I am now wondering if the drivers have been sabotaged to not work on purpose to try and force a new purchase.

*2nd edit*  So it appears the software/driver program is the issue.  I just canceled and tried again via the manual windows setup and it went smooth.  It is just cannon's software that is the issue here.  It installed the drivers and would just not initialize them.

Greetings,

I'm not sure I agree with all your statements,  but Canon still offers drivers for the MX490 for the latest versions of Windows and Mac OS.

The mistake that many people make when installing a USB device is connecting them before installing drivers or running the setup utility.

Since this is another user's thread and you don't have the same systems, the solution that may apply to her situation might be different than yours.

Starting your own topic is recommended so your issue receives the visibility and help it deserves.  It also makes it easier for people searching for answers.

In addition, you are not able to mark a reply as a solution when you post your own issue in another user's thread.  Maybe there's something about your new hardware that is not compatible with the printer?  Maybe you're running software application or antivirus that's causing installation or detection issues. Maybe it's something else?

All hardware has a service life.  If you take a 9-year-old iPhone to Apple. They'll laugh you right out the door.  Microsoft won't support Windows XP.  Epson, HP, Sharp are all the same. Manufacturers cannot support products indefinitely.  Canon has a upgrade program for products that have reached the rnd of their service life.  The upgrade program offers a discount and free shipping.  That's a pretty generous offer.   If you buy from another manufacturer, you'll be paying full price.
