Trying to connect imageCLASS MF264dw II to MacBook Pro without router (local network - ad hoc)

I just purchased a Canon ImageClass MF264DW II and I need it to connect to my MacBook Pro laptop (OS 10.9.5 Mavericks). I can't seem to get either to see the other. I already downloaded and installed the appropriate drivers. The previous printer connected perfectly. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
