PIXMA TR4520 not connecting to laptop

MeganEE
Apprentice

I received a new router this week and ever since then, my printer will not wireless print from my laptop (Dell Inspiron 3501). The internet provider confirmed they can "see" the printer is connected to the wifi, so that's not the issue.  I have uninstalled/reinstalled the printer on my laptop and that doesn't work either.  When I wireless print, it pops an "ERROR" code up and won't print anything.  (If I plug a cord into my laptop from the printer it prints then.)

Mind you, I know about 5% of anything tech related so I could be doing a thousand things wrong.  But, I didn't have any printing or wifi connecting trouble prior to this.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Megan! Thank you for contributing to the Canon Community.

When wireless printing stops, we normally recommend checking the printer's network connection. I understand that your Internet Provider mentioned they see the printer on the network, but I recommend that you check the printer yourself. You can do that by printing out the network setting on plain copy paper. The instructions for doing this can be found in this web article:
https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/s/article/ART171561

When you have the printed network settings, you will see line numbers on the left side of the page. Please check the following lines:
3 Wireless LAN "should be Active"
3-2-5 Connection "should be Active"
3-2-1 Signal Strength "70 percent or better is recommended"
3-2-2 Link Quality "70 percent or better is recommended"
3-2-6 SSID "should be the name of your Wi-Fi network"
3-2-12 IP Address "the first number should be 192, 172, or 10"

As long as Wireless LAN (line 3) and Connection (line 3-2-5) are Active, that should mean there is an active connection. The IP Address should start with one of the numbers mentioned above. If the signal strength and link quality are lower than 70 percent, it may still work, but it might not be reliable.

If you see "Inactive" next to Connection or the old Wi-Fi signal next to SSID, you will need to connect the printer to the new Wi-Fi. You will find instructions for that in the following web article:
https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/s/article/ART171589

Once you are certain that the printer is connected to the Wi-Fi, please do the following on your Windows 11 computer:

  1. Disconnect the printer's USB connection to the computer and leave it disconnected.
  2. Close the applications that are currently running on your computer.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. When the computer finishes turning back on, click on the Windows symbol in the bar at the bottom of your screen (normally the left most signal in the middle of the bar).
  5. Click on Settings:
  6. In the left column of the Settings window, click on "Bluetooth & Devices."
  7. On the right side of the Settings window, click on "Printers & Scanners."
  8. Look for the Canon TR4500 series in the list of printers on the right side of the window. You might see it listed more than one time.
  9. Click on the first Canon TR4500 series on the list and then click on the REMOVE button in the top right of the window.
  10. Once that printer is removed (deleted) from the list, please click on the next Canon TR4500 series (if there is another one) and click on the REMOVE button for that printer to delete it from the list.
  11. Repeat step 9 for any other Canon TR4500 series on the printer list until they are all removed (deleted).
  12. Once all Canon TR4500 series printers have been deleted, please click on the following link:
    https://pdisp01.c-wss.com/gdl/WWUFORedirectTarget.do?id=MDEwMDAwOTYzMDA1&cmp=ABR&lang=EN
  13. After you click on the above link, a program that installs the printer on your computer will begin to download.
  14. When the file finishes downloading, please open and let it run.
  15. Follow the instructions that pop up to finish the installation of the printer.

Once you have done the above, the printer will be added back to your computer. Please restart the computer again. When the computer finishes turning back on, please open something that you would like to print and select the Print option from the menu. When the print window opens, please make sure that the Canon TR4500 series is selected.

If you are still unable to print after following these instructions, please take a photo or screenshot of the error that you are getting. Then, reply to this post and attach the photo so we can see what the error is saying. If you can't take a photo or screenshot of the receipt, please write down the entire error message (including any codes) and include it in your reply.

I hope this helps. Thanks again!

It says inactive, so I tried to connect it using the instructions, but the printer tells me "failed to connect to the wireless router (see manual)".

Hi Megan!

Thanks for reaching back. I see that you performed the steps to use the "Manual Connect" option to set up your printer with your Wi-Fi. I do need to know what happened during that connection attempt. Please answer the following questions:

  • When you got to step 4, were you able to select your Wi-Fi network from the display and press OK?
  • Immediately after selecting your Wi-Fi network in step 4, were you given the opportunity to enter a password?
  • If you did get the opportunity to enter the password, were you able to enter all of the characters?
Please note, in order to enter capital letters, numbers, and symbols, you can follow the instructions in this web article:
    https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/s/article/ART171591

If you need to repeat the manual connection setup in order to answer the above questions, here is that link again:
https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/s/article/ART171589

It is very important that I know what happened immediately after you selected your Wi-Fi network in step 4 and whether you were able to enter all the characters in your password (including upper-case letters, numbers, and symbols).

Looking forward to your reply. Thanks again.

I didn't get to step 4 because it never connected to wifi.  That's where I'm stuck.

In the instructions of "Connecting Your Printer to a Wireless LAN (Manual Connect) - TR4520", I made it to step #4. The printer can find my wifi network but it won't connect.  After step #4, it keeps throwing the error "Failed to connect to the wireless router (see manual)".  I can't go further than that.

Greetings,

The printer requires a 2.4Ghz wireless broadcast that supports WPA2 encryption.  Please ensure you new router supports these standards.

Helpful tips:

Many routers use a single SSID name for all of their network broadcasts.  (2.4, 5G. 6, etc).  In some cases, giving each network a unique name can help. (example)

mynetwork2.4, mynwetwork5G (whatever you like) can help the printer connect to the appropriate network.  You can also temporarily disable all broadcasts except for the 2.4Ghz and re-enable them after a successful connection is made.

If the router is configured to use WPA3 encryption, the printer will not connect to its wireless networks.  Confirm or change the encryption to WPA3/WPA2 (combination for backwards compatibility) or WPA2 to ensure compatibility.

You'll need to get the printer connected to your router before it can be reinstalled on your computer.  I think you're close and just need to get past this last step.

I know how to turn my computer on and print things.  So, telling me words like "configure" or "change the encryption" is like telling me to fly to the moon.  Lol

I'm just going to have to find someone local to hire and figure this out for me.  Thanks for all of your help so far@ though!

Hi Megan.

After reading the messages that you posted on October 3, I can tell you that you will need to turn off the WPA3 setting on your router (at least temporarily). You can do that through the router settings window on a computer or mobile device. Routers allow access to the settings through a web browser. Some Internet providers offer an app that you can install on a mobile device.

Since routers are different, I recommend contacting your Internet provider (if they issued the router to you) or the router's manufacturer (if you purchased it). Please have them show you how you can turn the WPA3 setting completely off. If you want to turn it back on after you connect the printer to the router, please ask them how to turn WPA3 off and on.

WPA3 has to be turned off while you are in the process of connecting the printer to your router, so if your router has a WPA3/WPA2 option along with a WPA2/WPA option, please choose WPA2/WPA. If your router has switches for WP3, WPA2, and WPA, please make sure the one for WPA3 is off.

After you turn off WPA3, please follow the instructions for Manual Connect again. This time, you will be able to enter the router password after you choose your Wi-Fi. Once the password you enter is approved by the router, it will connect.

Here is a link to the manual connect instructions:
https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/s/article/ART171589

For help with entering the password, you can visit:
https://support.usa.canon.com/kb/s/article/ART171591

If you want to turn WPA3 back on after the printer is connected to your network, you can. Just remember that if you change your Wi-Fi password and need to connect the printer to your network again, you will need to go back into the router settings and turn WPA3 off.

I hope this helps. Take care.
