imageCLASS MF242dw - device not found during driver install

My printer has worked for years over different networks and devices. Just recently all of the devices that once would connect just fine can no longer find the printer. I’ve tried to delete the printer from settings of my laptop and go through reinstalling all the drivers but during driver install the printer device is not being found even though it is correctly connected via wireless LAN connection through the SSID settings. Please help I’ve put hours into trying to fix this with no avail.

Greetings,

Maybe this will help.. Please login to your router's admin portal and look at the list of attached devices.  This will allow you to to confirm the printer's connection to the network and see the IP address that's been assigned.

From your laptop, see if you can ping that IP address using a command prompt or terminal.  You can also enter the IP address into a browser and see if the printer's web server will display.

Not sure if you're using Windows or Mac?  If you are using Windows and have third-party antivirus installed, this could block communication.

Once connection and communication have been confirmed, the installer should be able to detect the printer.

Hi Rick! Thank you for the suggestions!
I’ve logged into router admin and verified that printer IP address is connected to the router

I am using Windows 11 - turned off firewall and excluded the downloaded drivers from the windows antivirus

When I try to ping the printer IP address through command prompt on laptop it’s only giving a “request timed out” response.
still not finding the printer during driver install.
Anything else you think I should try?

If you can't ping the printer's IP address from your computer that's the problem.  Something in the software environment or network is not allowing the two to communicate.

Are you using a stand-alone router or a mesh system?  Do you have other hardware behind the ISP's modem/router?

Troubleshooting Wi-Fi Connection for Canon imageCLASS MF242dw

Common Connection Issues

  • Network Visibility: Ensure your Wi-Fi network is functioning and visible. Check if the SSID (network name) is displayed on the printer's control panel.

  • Correct Network Selection: Make sure the printer is set to connect to the correct Wi-Fi network. If necessary, manually enter the SSID and password.

  • Connection Type: Confirm that the printer is not trying to connect via both wired and wireless LAN simultaneously, as this can cause conflicts.

Steps to Connect to Wi-Fi

  1. Check Wi-Fi Status: Ensure the Wi-Fi indicator on the printer is lit. If not, the printer may not be connected to the network.

  2. Access Network Settings:

    • Press the "Menu" button on the printer.
    • Navigate to the "Network" settings.
  3. Select Wireless LAN: Choose the option to connect via Wireless LAN.

  4. Enter Network Details:

    • If prompted, input your Wi-Fi network password using the control panel.
    • Confirm by pressing the "OK" button.
  5. Print Network Settings: After attempting to connect, print a network settings report to verify the connection status.

Additional Troubleshooting Tips

  • Reboot Devices: Restart your printer and router. This can resolve temporary connectivity issues.

  • Firmware Update: Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer. Updating can fix bugs related to connectivity.

  • Firewall Settings: Ensure that your computer's firewall is not blocking the printer's connection. Adjust settings if necessary.

  • Direct Connection: If Wi-Fi issues persist, consider using the printer's direct connection mode to print from mobile devices without a router.
