This sounds like the power button might be stuck in the on position. If the camera is new, this should be repaired under warranty. Has the camera been in any dusty environments lately? There may be some dirt by the power button that is preventing the proper operation of the power button. Has the camera been exposed to any dampness that might have shortened out the circuit board that has the power button on it? If so, that board/button combination would need to be replaced. I would have it checked out by an authorized Canon dealer to make sure of the exact problem and repair.
You could first try a reset of the camera in the menu options. You might get lucky.

Thanks for the advise but decided to pull it apart and investigate. Found corrosion on a couple of the ribbon connections so removed from the ribbon connections and retaining clips and cleaned the corrosion off and blowing the fine dust from the corrosion out of the clips. Reasembled and works like new. Hope this mmay help others if the problem ever arrises.
