UPDATED May 5:
I apologize to the forum for mixing two different problems. They are unrelated.
Problem #1: User error. I thought I was using a class 6 SD card but I was wrong. The yellow "!" indicates a pathologically slow card. Upgrading to a class 10 resolved this problem.
Problem #2: UNRESOLVED. Red battery indicator comes on prematurely. On a fresh charge, it'll turn red after recording for a couple of minutes. On a partially drained battery, it turns red immediately upon entering movie mode or pressing the record button. Turn the camera off and then right back on in "still" mode and it shows full charge and works fine ... until trying to shoot video. I have not precisely measured recording times but it'll record for at least 20 (maybe 30?) minutes while flashing red.

This should be useful for charging batteries for SX280 HS on the go. I have not purchased this product yet.

I too am waiting.
Have people with the camera that downloaded new firmware that "fixes" the problem found that the problem is fixed?
Some people are experimenting with (1600 maH )batteries that are not what Canon ships (1000 maH) with the camera, First, is this safe for the camera? Second, what is Canon's opinion on doing this? Does anyone from Canon read and truly understand the issues? Even if the 1600maH battery will not hurt the camera, does the firmware and camera hardware handle this higher-rated battery? What about the standard charger for this camera? Does it handle the higher amps?
Canon really seems to have blown it on this camera.

Well, got the reply from Amazon.. they will allow the return without a restocking fee, and credit back my original card..:-) now I just gotta figure out which camera to get in place of the SX280.. is there anything even close to the same caliber without spending over 400? I've decided that I don't really need WIFI or GPS, but would like to stay with a point and shoot with a large zoom. I already have an Elph 320, but the zoom is just not good enough.
Bumming me out because I really like this camera. (with the exception of the location of the flash). Does anybody have faith that canon will get the problem fixed?

Has Canon even acknowledged yet that this firmware update has not fixed the problem?
Either way, I doubt a firmware update alone will do it. Seems like this problem is less firmware and more an actual hardware issue that's draining a battery that isn't up to the job.
And I have no faith that Canon will resolve this any time soon - if ever.

Hi,
So I'm guessing that the firmware update haven't solved the battery indicator problem, if so can anyone suggest another canon camera that is equal in image and video quality?
Well, it did "solve" the battery indicator problem on mine, to the extent that I've used the camera for a full day, shot a bunch of photos, shot a few short videos, and never had it shut off or exhibit the low-battery indicator. Not once. That's basically what I bought the camera for. If you want hours of video time, you might buy a video camera. Failing that, best of luck with your quest.
